Why We Chose COMO Uma Ubud for a Multi-Generational Family Trip

COMO Uma Ubud — the jungle pool that made coming back to Bali feel completely new

We almost didn't go.

We had twin toddlers and a four-year-old. Ubud felt like a lot — the heat, the noise, the roads, the distance. We booked it because it was my dad's seventieth birthday, my sisters were coming and because some milestones are worth saying yes to even when the logistics feel impossible.

What we didn't expect was to leave wondering why we had ever doubted it.

COMO Uma Ubud sits just outside the centre of Ubud — peaceful, lush, removed from the traffic and noise without being isolated from it. It is a small hotel. Twenty-nine rooms across a handful of villa types, set into the hillside with the kind of jungle surroundings that make you feel, very quickly, that you are somewhere genuinely special.

For a group of fourteen across three generations, it worked because of one thing above all else: everyone had their own space, but nobody felt far away. The grandparents had their room. The sisters had their villas. We had our pool villa. And in the evenings, we found each other at the pool or the bar or the koi pond and it felt exactly like the family holiday it was supposed to be.

We had been here as backpackers five years earlier — different island, different budget, different life entirely. Coming back as a family felt like something closing and something opening at the same time. The same Bali. Completely different eyes.

The Rooms: Uma Pool Villa, Ubud Room and Uma Villa

The Uma Pool Villa private pool — where the twins napped while the adults exhaled

We had three different room types across our group — which means we can speak honestly to more than one configuration.

The Uma Pool Villa — us, our husband, eighteen-month twins and a four-year-old. The villa is spacious in the way that actually matters with small children: suitcases had a proper home, the children had room to move, and the private plunge pool meant that during nap times we had our own quiet corner of the world. At 160 square metres with a separate sitting area, dining area and king bed, it does not feel like a hotel room. It feels like a base.

The Ubud Room — my parents. Fifty-five square metres, furnished balcony, separate sitting area, air conditioning, free cribs available. Accessible enough for grandparents who wanted comfort over spectacle. The shuttle to town meant they never had to worry about the walk if their legs weren't up to it that day.

The Uma Villa — my sisters. At 180 square metres, connecting rooms available, separate dining and sitting areas. The configuration that works when you have older children who need space of their own.

All rooms come with free cribs for infants. All are soundproofed. All have air conditioning that actually works in Ubud heat.

👶
Toddler Tip — The Rooms: The Uma Pool Villa private plunge pool is a game-changer during afternoon nap time. While twins sleep, adults get a quiet pool entirely to themselves. Worth the upgrade for families with babies and toddlers.
👴
Grandparent Note — The Rooms: Ask about room location at booking — some are more accessible than others in terms of steps and distance from the main areas. The Ubud Room gave my parents their own balcony, their own pace, and none of the noise of small children at 5am.

The Pools: Private Villa Pool and the Main Pool

Two very different pool experiences. Both worth knowing about before you book.

The private plunge pool — included with the Uma Pool Villa — is where we spent nap times. Small, quiet, yours entirely. When you have twin toddlers on a schedule, having a pool that requires no packing up, no transit, no negotiating with anyone else is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

The main pool is where we actually spent our afternoons. Bigger, warmer, and — crucially — with a shallow section that was perfect for a four-year-old who wanted independence in the water. We gravitated to it every day after our morning outings. The children quietened in the water. The grandparents found sun loungers. The adults finally sat down.

The main pool at COMO Uma Ubud — warmer, bigger, and with a shallow section that made all the difference

Most evenings, once the twins were asleep in their strollers under the snooze shade, we moved to the bar. Three generations around a table. Cold drinks. The koi pond glowing in the evening light. The kind of evening that makes everything — every difficult flight, every toddler meltdown, every 5am start — feel absolutely worth it.

👶
Toddler Tip — The Pools: Bring a baby pool float for twins in the main pool — the shallow section is perfect for toddlers but a float gives them independence and keeps your arms free. UV rash vests are essential — the Ubud sun is fierce even on cloudy days. And a snooze shade for the stroller means the twins can nap poolside or at the bar while you actually stay out.

Cloud Kissed Luxury Tip — The Pools: Book the Uma Pool Villa if you are travelling with babies or toddlers. The private plunge pool during nap time is worth every penny of the upgrade. When the children sleep, you swim. It is that simple.

The Grounds and the Complimentary Morning Walk

The grounds at COMO Uma are small but considered. Lush, quiet, jungle-dense in the way that Ubud does better than anywhere. The koi pond at the heart of the property — surrounded by tropical planting, with the thatched restaurant terrace behind it — is one of those hotel spaces that makes you slow down without realising you are doing it.

The koi pond at COMO Uma Ubud — where evenings slowed down and stayed that way

Every morning, COMO Uma offers a complimentary guided walk through the local rice fields. We joined it on two mornings. My mum joined it on three. It was gentle enough for grandparents, interesting enough for a six-year-old, and exactly the kind of included extra that makes a hotel feel like it understands what its guests actually need.

👴
Grandparent Note — The Grounds: The complimentary morning walk is perfectly paced for older travellers. Flat, guided, unhurried. My mum went three mornings running and said it was the part of the trip she looked forward to most. It also gave her independence — something to do at her own pace while we managed the morning toddler logistics.

The Food: Breakfast at Kemiri, Evenings at the Bar

Breakfast happened every morning at Kemiri — an open-air pavilion beside a fish pond, the kind of setting that makes even a 6:30am start with toddlers feel civilised. Every single morning, the hotel had a large table set up for our party of fourteen, high chairs included, without us ever having to ask twice. For a group our size, that is not a small thing. It is the difference between a relaxed start to the day and a logistical headache before anyone has had coffee.

The choice on the menu was genuinely impressive too: fresh smoothies, a full spread of tropical fruit, cooked options for the kids who wanted something familiar, and enough variety that nobody in a group of fourteen was ever stuck without something they wanted. Grandparents who wanted something light. Children who wanted something simple. Adults who wanted everything. Kemiri delivered for all of it, every single morning.

Evenings were a different rhythm entirely — most nights ended at the bar, twins asleep in their strollers under the snooze shade, the rest of us with a drink in hand and the koi pond glowing somewhere behind us. The bar food was simple and good. Nobody was dressing up for dinner. Nobody needed to.

The hotel also has Uma Cucina, an Italian restaurant with a reputation for handmade pasta and woodfired pizza, and a semi-private dining area beside Kemiri that's apparently popular with larger family groups — we didn't eat there ourselves, but worth knowing it exists if you're travelling as a bigger party and want the option.

The Service: The Best We Have Experienced Anywhere

Hotels talk about service. COMO Uma delivers it.

Every request — and with fourteen people across three generations, there were many — was dealt with immediately. Not eventually. Immediately. The kind of attentiveness that does not feel performative. It felt genuine. Warm. Like people who were actually pleased you were there.

For a large multi-generational group, that matters more than any amenity. Coordinating fourteen people in a foreign country is inherently complicated. The staff at COMO Uma made it feel uncomplicated. They remembered names. They anticipated needs. When my dad mentioned at breakfast that he preferred his coffee a certain way, it arrived that way every morning after without him asking again.

The shuttle to the centre of Ubud ran regularly and removed one of the biggest practical anxieties of the trip — the roads into town are genuinely poor, and navigating them with toddlers and grandparents is not straightforward. The shuttle meant my parents had independence. They could go to the markets, browse the shops, come back when they wanted. We stayed at the pool. Nobody had to compromise.

Location: Just Outside the Centre, Exactly Where You Want to Be

If you'd rather stay a little closer to the centre of town, there are plenty of options within walking distance of Ubud's markets and restaurants — the map above shows what's available.

COMO Uma Ubud sits about five minutes from the centre of Ubud by road — close enough to feel connected, far enough to feel removed.

The centre of Ubud is wonderful and overwhelming in equal measure. Markets, temples, shops, noise, traffic, tourists. We loved it in doses. The hotel gave us somewhere to come back to. Peaceful. Cool. Quiet. It reset us between outings.

The complimentary shuttle runs to and from the centre and took the transport question entirely off the table. My parents used it daily. We used it when the children needed it. When we wanted to walk — and the walk is genuinely pleasant through the rice field paths — we walked.

Everything we wanted to do was reachable from COMO Uma. The Tegalalang rice terraces, Tirta Empul temple, the Monkey Forest, the Bali Swing, the waterfall — all within a reasonable drive. If you want to arrange a private driver for the day, the hotel can arrange it. If you want to book a private guided tour that covers the main sights, that is also straightforward to organise.

The Honest Bit: Stairs, Strollers and the Ubud Reality

COMO Uma Ubud is not fully stroller-friendly throughout the grounds. There are stairs. Depending on where your room is located, the distance between villa and main pool involves some uneven terrain. We knew this going in and managed it with a toddler carrier — essential packing for Ubud generally, not just for this hotel.

The biggest practical challenge was the walk back to the villa at the end of the evening with sleeping twins. Worth it. Every time. But worth knowing before you book, especially if you are on an upper level.

Ubud itself is not stroller territory. The roads are busy and uneven, the pavements are inconsistent, and the heat makes pushing a double stroller more effort than it is worth. We carried the twins almost everywhere outside the hotel. A good carrier is non-negotiable. So is insect repellent — particularly in the evenings — and insect patches for children who won't tolerate spray.

Beyond those caveats, we had nothing to fault. The hotel delivered on every expectation and exceeded most.

Beautiful grounds — with one honest caveat worth knowing before you book

"We thought Bali would be too much with the children. We were wrong. Not just manageable — better for it. Seeing Ubud through the eyes of an eighteen-month-old who has just seen a real monkey for the first time, or through my dad's eyes at the Tirta Empul temple— it changes what the trip means. COMO Uma made that possible. It gave us the base we needed to actually be present for all of it.

COMO Uma Ubud vs COMO Shambhala Estate: Which Is Right for Families?

The question comes up constantly. Both are COMO properties in Bali. Both are exceptional. They are, however, very different experiences.

COMO Shambhala Estate is a remote wellness retreat — more ascetic, more spa-focused, set deep into the jungle. It skews toward adults seeking a specific kind of restorative experience. Some configurations have age restrictions for children.

COMO Uma Ubud is the right choice for families. It is town-adjacent, service-focused, accessible, and genuinely set up to work for mixed-age groups. The shuttle, the room configurations, the main pool with the shallow section, the morning walk — all of it points toward guests who want comfort and connection, not seclusion and silence.

If you are travelling with toddlers and grandparents, Uma is the answer. Shambhala is for a different trip entirely — one to keep in mind for when the children are older and you want a week that is genuinely just for you.

Is COMO Uma Ubud Good for Multi-Generational Families?

Yes. With two caveats worth knowing.

The first is the stroller reality — covered above. Carrier is the move inside the hotel and in Ubud generally.

The second is that room location matters. Ask at booking which villa is most accessible for grandparents or young children. The hotel will advise. It is worth the conversation.

Everything else — the service, the pools, the grounds, the location, the morning walk, the evening rhythm — works beautifully for families spanning multiple generations. We came with fourteen people aged eighteen months to seventy years and left wishing we had booked longer.

Book COMO Uma Ubud

The answer is yes — with the right room and the right expectations, COMO Uma Ubud works beautifully for every generation

Planning Your Trip to Ubud

COMO Uma Ubud was the base that made our Bali trip work. But the hotel is only part of the story. Ubud itself — the rice terraces, the temples, the Monkey Forest, the waterfalls — is what fills the days and stays with you long after.
